X-Men Origins: Wolverine

Submitted by methystic on Friday, 1 May 2009No Comment

Wolverine-X-MenNot to be considered a sequel to the successful X-Men trilogy and though exploring the back-story of the hirsute Logan, nor is it a direct prequel. Centering on what made Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) the cigar chewing moody so and so he is, this take on the Marvel favourite is reportedly a dark and brooding affair. Logan suffers a tragedy as a young boy and bewildered by the loss stumbles through an unfulfilling life. That is until he meets the shadowy figures of the Weapon X facility at Crystal Lake, led by the nefarious Sergeant William Stryker (Danny Huston), who aim to utilize the disillusioned soldier’s remarkable ability to heal as a means for war based victory. Grafting an unbreakable alloy onto his skeleton they create an supposedly indestructible force. They do though make a grave error when offing his missus and Wolverine looks for payback by wreaking havoc upon those that have wronged him.

An unofficial and very early version was leaked online last month amongst mass speculation of studio meddling and more than a few snide words on the director Gavin Hood. Jackman, who is also on executive producing duties, and his side-burns were reportedly heartbroken. Fan word, online, however has been largely positive but some dodgy effects shots (see the helicopter sequence mid promo) and the introduction of a gazillion new mutants (Gambit, The Blob, Deadpool, Bolt), may see this summer flag pole release be a little too crowded. Perhaps the director should adopt Rafa Benitez style rotational policy next time around.

Currently showing at Utopolis and Belval. Full review to follow.
