Weekend Roundup 10 - 12 July
Anybody who braved the ominous skies last Monday at the Chateau de Bourglinster was rewarded with a damn good soaking, and an even better production of Romeo and Juliet by the TNT theatre company. I only mention this because the majority of the events we here at Scene find interesting this weekend will be weather dependent. My advice - Do not leave home without your plastic poncho.
The highlight of this weekend, and not for the first time, could well be in Dudelange where the Summer Stage Festival (outdoors) takes place tonight, and continues on Saturday and Sunday night. Opening things up tonight is a Beatles tribute band, but the real ‘belle of the ball’ is the appearance on Saturday night of the fantastic Aussie, Abba tribute band, Björn Again. These guys have been going for longer now than the original group and have even been endorsed by the lovely Agnetha Fältskog.
Sunday night there’s a change in tone when the Sweet Soul Music Revue take to the boards. All shows take place in the Parc Le’h in Dudelange and tickets are selling fast, so get clicking if you don’t want to miss out.
Also on Friday, something completely different. The ‘Murder and Manslaughter’ exhibition which opens today at the Musée d’Histoire de la Ville sounds like an interesting one for those with a taste for the macabre. The exhibition focuses on the phenomenon of violent crime and the moral and philosophical issues surrounding the greater public’s craving for sensation.
After all that you might feel like a bit of light relief. Saturday’s ‘Waiter and Waitress Race’, which takes place in the Place d’Armes and city centre, offers just that. Here you have the opportunity to both cheer on your favourite barman/woman, and/or distract the other ones who do such a good job of ignoring you when you’re gasping for a drink. The race involves charging around the city centre in full attire while balancing glasses of water, which must remain intact, on a tray. The fun begins at 15h in the Place d’Armes.
Saturday night offers a bewildering choice of musical events. We’ve already mentioned Björn Again in Dudelange, but just down the road in Belval the ‘24 Heures Electroniques - Steelparade’ free gig will be taking place (see Wednesday‘s preview), and the ‘Blues Express Differdange’ promises no less than 36 bands playing on some 20 stages, if a bit of blues or boogie-woogie is more your thing. In addition, the OMNI festival kicks off at the Abbaye de Neumünster with a ‘Fiesta Cubana’. For more details on this, check our calendar.
And finally, advance notice about Rod Stewart. The perennially blond, mop-topped, husky-throated-warbler will be stretching out his hot legs in Differdange on Tuesday next on his ‘One Rockin’ Night’ tour. You think he’s still got what it takes?
Wherever you go, be safe and have a good one.
