Second Nature

Second nature is an ambitious group show taking place in the Dexia BIL exhibition space and sculpture gardens, which seeks to deal with a wide range of concerns relating to the development of our modern civilisation.

Over the course of four months, twenty five internationally renowned artists set out to demonstrate how human nature in it’s primordial state has become fundamentally changed over time. The concept underlying the exhibition is that this transformation occurs as a result of human nature itself, and that through our inventions, our genius, by the tools we have created, we have changed the meaning and concept of society. Religion, the legitimacy of power, technological developments are constantly moving, changing and shifting. The exhibition puts forward the argument that the end result of our transformation, evident now, will be a second nature, a ‘counter-nature’, with all it’s inherent risks

All of the artists are presenting a piece either in the gallery or in the park, and hence the exhibition is not a group show in the conventional sense, providing, as it does, a more autonomous space for each artist.

The exhibition runs until 17th October 2009.
