Probably two of the five greatest meals I’ve had, have been Italian. One was a major family affair when a ‘mamma’ of a friend of mine produced four courses that I can still remember now, thirty years later. Another was in a bakery in Tuscany.

On to the food. The menu for the Maison des Brasseurs reflects the traditional look and feel of the restaurant. The usual Luxembourgish dishes are well represented, notably the famous Judd mat gaardebohnen (smoked pork neck with broad beans).

Competition at the European level is fierce, as it was this year. Nevertheless, the small but perfectly formed group from the NWTC, led by a virtuoso performance by Adrian Diffey as the crazed professor, only went and won the bally thing.

The only place in Luxembourg that offers skydiving is the Aérodrome de Wiltz-Noertrange just outside Wiltz in the north of the country. They offer tandem skydives with no experience required, or courses for getting your skydiving certificate. Expensive, but an experience you will never forget.

Agua de Côco, with its playfully hilarious name, is marked as the place to go for funky food and a hot Latino atmosphere. It was recommended to us by a girlfriend who said it was lively and the food was funny and creative.

Alf was, in some ways, ahead of his time. Many marathon runners will ‘carbo-load’ in the week leading up to the marathon. He just crammed it all in five minutes before the race started.

Given the richness and variety of the culinary heritage, it shall remain one of life’s mysteries to me, how difficult it is to find a decent Spanish restaurant north of the Pyrenees. Now here in Luxembourg we have a couple and I haven’t been to all of them…
